Actor Peter Kelamis has been leading a distinguished career within the Canadian entertainment industry, having recently portrayed the character of Dr.Adam Brody on Syfy’s Stargate Universe, over the course of the show’s two seasons.
With SGU having concluded its run last month and Peter currently in an exciting point in his acting career,we took the opportunity to discuss the actor’s experience in playing the role of Adam Brody.Peter particularly discusses how he related to the character of Brody as well as some of the challenges involved in the role. The actor also shares his thoughts on how well SGU’S series finale,Gauntlet served as an end to the show, his perspective on why SGU was cancelled and his thoughts on the future of the Stargate franchise.
Abbas Karimjee:Were you a fan of Science fiction prior to being appointed the role of Adam Brody and how familiar were you with the Stargate franchise,in particular?
Peter Kelamis: I was a huge Sci-Fi fan and had appeared in 2 Episodes of SG-1…”Space Race” and “Smoke And Mirrors”.I was very excited to be a part of a new SG Series.
AK: What was the most challenging aspect playing Brody and how did you cope with this challenge?
PK:The biggest challenge by far was some of the Science related dialogue. All the theories were based on scientific fact and theory soo…I had to look like I knew what I was talking about…It took a lot of extra memorizing…
AK: How did you relate to the character of Brody?
PK:I instantly related to Brody…a character, much like the others, being forced into a situation beyond his control. As the Series went on and his comedic quirks came out…I really enjoyed portraying him even more.
AK:How do you think the character of Brody developed over the course of the show’s two seasons and what aspirations did you have for the character?
PK: The Producers and Writers found out I was a stand-up comic, they began giving me more comedic freedom in scenes…and I loved them for it.I was looking forward to playing Brody for years to come, but unfortunately that was cut short…very disappointed.
AK: What are your thoughts on the SGU’S series finale, Gauntlet? How well of an ending do you think it served for SGU and what were your hopes for how the show would have continued ,had it been renewed for a third season?
PK:I thought “Gauntlet” was poetic and haunting, especially since I knew the show’s fate when I finally watched it. I think we had some amazing possibilities ahead…it is a real shame that we didn’t get to continue our story. The Producers gave us a “Heads Up” as to where the story was headed…and I was looking forward to it.
AK:Back in December, Syfy announced that SGU’S second season would be its last. What was your reaction when you discovered that the series had been cancelled and why do you think SGU was unable to attract the audience needed for the series to continue? What was your perspective on the decision of the producers to have SGU take the Stargate franchise in a new direction, with a strong emphasis on character relationships and survival?
PK:I loved the Producers decision to take the show in such a bold new direction. It was amazing. There were a number of reasons as to why SGU was cancelled and none of them good ones as far as I am concerned. You can argue time slots, anti-SGU campaigns, the flawed Nielson system, but ultimately I suppose there is no SINGLE reason.
The news came as a great shock to myself and the rest of the cast. I found out, like most of them, through Twitter…not the best way to find out your show was cancelled. I have to look at those two years as positive otherwise I will tear up and get emotional.I had THE best time, with THE best people possible around me to share it…I will cherish it always. Not to mention the awesome Fans of the show that I still converse with on Twitter and Facebook.
AK: With SGU having been cancelled as a TV series, Brad Wright engaged in a series of negotiations for SGU to continue on either in the form of a TV movie or as miniseries. At a recent convention in Chicago,Wright reported that the negotiations were unsuccessful. What was your reaction to this and what do you think is in store for the future of the Stargate franchise? Do you think it will be revived at a later time? Why or why not?
PK:I know for a fact Brad tried his best to get a movie deal to finish our story. It didn’t happen, but not due to lack of effort.I don’t know if the Stargate Franchise will continue or not…The crew of the Destiny is in stasis for 3 years…maybe at that time a Network will pick up the show and bring us back…we are after all frozen, not dead. Stranger things have happened in T.V.Maybe we come back in three years and Bobby Ewing steps out of the shower and kick starts the whole thing?
AK: Reflecting on your experience as a cast member on SGU, what are some of your favorite moments, either on – screen as Brody or behind the scenes?
PK:There are probably too many to mention…whenever we would film a scene in the Mess Hall, with all the cast present…we would get into soo much trouble cus we would be laughing our asses off too much.I truly miss the comradery in a big way.I laughed solid to for two years. My sides still hurt.
My favorite Brody moments were probably the “2001” “Numa Numa” sequence in “Hope” and the “Get off my lawn” grumpy Brody in “Epilogue”…with a million more in between.
AK: How has being a part of SGU impacted your career as well as your personal life, in terms of the friendships you formed?
PK:I have been recognized from my work on SGU in strange places…The Las Vegas airport subway tram, a cold beer and wine store, a cigar shop in Victoria..etc. And each time, I am truly caught off guard. As far as career goes, it has definitely opened up some doors and I hope to start working on a series project soon. As far as personally, I have gained an entire cast members list of awesome new friends. I love those guys, and gals, a great deal.
AK:With SGU currently being the last chapter for the Stargate franchise, how do you hope both the show and the character of Brody will be remembered?
PK:I hope people think I did the role justice and brought something of myself to it. I hope I made them laugh, at times get emotional…all in all, I hope they believed that Brody was real and that I somehow made them care about him. That would make me feel good.
AK:What message do you have for fans as SGU draws to a close?
PK:-I thank all of the Fans of SGU for watching and enjoying the show…your outcries of support are amazing. On the final night when Twitter was lit up with “Standing Ovation” comments…I would lie if I said it didn’t bring a tear to my eye.I have yet to appear at any SGU Convention, but hope to get invited in the near future. I cannot wait to shake a few hands and share a chat or two about this great experience with people one on one.
AK:What other acting projects have you been involved in,which you would like to share with viewers and what future aspirations do you have for your acting career?
PK:I am currently splitting time between Vancouver and Los Angeles, but with more of a focus on L.A. right now.We have a home in both cities.I am excited about the possibilities that L.A. has to offer and my Management there is amazing.I know they will steer me into another great role on another great show very soon…I can’t wait.

Indeed we are greatly disappointed to have to report that Stargate Universe has been cancelled by Syfy . The series, which is currently in its second season, will air the last ten episodes in its second half this spring, before drawing to a premature end.
The news of the abrupt cancellation was first posted on Twitter today, where Syfy’s Craig Engler indicated that “Syfy will end its original action-adventure series Stargate Universe when the show returns with the final 10 episodes of its second season in the Spring of 2011,” Engler said. “The Stargate franchise — consisting of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe — has aired on Syfy since 2002.
Stargate Universe was to be different from its sister series, Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis in that it was to be more of a character based drama, which although would maintain the long term elements of adventure and humour, would also develop a more darker grittier tone. The series initially received a great deal of negative fan reception as the inception of the series was announced in simultaneous reports to the cancellation of the previous, Stargate Atlantis, causing many fans to be misinterpret the news reports to suggest that Stargate Universe was an intended replacement of this previous incarnation.
Although the series debut received strong ratings, with over 2 million viewers, by end of the inaugural season, the series was merely attracting 1.5 million viewers. In an effort to regain viewership,SyFy made a decision to move the Friday night series to Tuesdays, a night where programs tend to typically attract more live viewers . However, this effort has proven to have gone in vein as the first half of the current second season merely averaged 1.1 million viewers. It should, however be noted that the series scores significantly higher ratings in DVR viewings, suggesting that there is still a strong fanbase for the series. Possible reasons for the great number of delayed viewings include the great competition present from other network series on Tuesday nights.
There has been no news as to the possibility of a fourth Stargate series nor has there been any news on the developments of a SGU movie, to follow the series finale Deliverance, which will air in June 2011 as a cliff-hanger.
To make matters worse, various cast members of the series have reported that they found out about the news from their fans on Twitter and received no prior notice of the cancellation.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire cast and crew of Stargate Universe for their efforts into this series. Indeed, we embraced the new direction of Stargate, which you had helped create and were looking forward to having the series further develop in its exciting direction. We shall remember both the characters and storylines , which the series established and had the potential to further explore, for years to come.Thank you for a spectacular two years and best wishes for the future are extended to all those involved in the series.
What is your reaction to the series’ cancellation? What are your thoughts on the future of the Stargate franchise?
UPDATE- Producer, Joseph Mallozzi indicated on his blog, that there still may be a minimal extent of hope , for a third season of Stargate Universe. Though he maintained that such an outcome was unlikely, he did assert that it was possible, saying the following.
“Well, the SyFy cancellation makes it very long odds that we’ll be producing a third season next year. BUT IS THIS THE END? Damn you’re persistent. The honest answer is: I don’t know. No, that’s not entirely true. The truth is I do know some – but only enough to say it doesn’t look good and it’s very log odds we’ll be producing a third season next year – yet still only enough to say I can’t say this is definitely the end. At least for now”.
Further developments on alternative approaches to producing the third season, will be posted on this blog as soon as they are available.
Indeed we were at the Inner Space SGU Live event, which took place on Friday, November 12 in Toronto and are now here bring you the highlights
The exciting event began with lead actor, Robert Carlyle who commented on the developments of his character. Carlyle commented on how , although Rush would have liked for the discovery of the bridge to remain a secret from the fellow crew members, he believes that ultimately Rush’s goal is to ascend. Carlyle adds that this is because Rush does not have anything left behind in this world and this option, of pursuing higher power would be the most likely option for him.
Carlyle also commented on producing his first episode, Pathogen. He said he thought it was appropriate that he was assigned to direct this episode as he could work at helping to convey the emotions in the character relationships which needed to be strongly featured ,between Eli Wallace and his mother as well Camille Wray and her girlfriend, Sharon.
Actor Louis Ferria also appeared on the show. The actor recalled his initial interactions with lead actor, Robert Carlyle commenting on the humorous miscommunications between them, due to Carlyle’s accent. He then commented on how he was proud that both he and Carlyle were like the mother and father of the cast as a result of their distinguished careers.
When asked about the possibility of how the ship may have given TJ the visions of her baby being safe similar to the way in which it gave visions to Colonel Young, actress Alaina Huffman had some interesting insights. She said that the characters often have two lives aboard the ship – their personal lives and work lives. For TJ, this difference has been blurred and given the amount of stress she was under for her responsibilities as medic, the ship just may have given her these visions as a way for her to move forward.
Actor, Brian J Smith was asked why his character, Lt Mathew Scott did not take the chance to rise up the ranks in the recent episode, Trial and Error. Smith gave some great insights on this saying that it would have been both selfish and stupid for Scott do this. The information we had was that Destiny needed Young, said Smith and the ship shut down because of him. Scott did what he had to, by getting Young back up as leader.
Actor Jamil Walker Smith was also asked about her character. After having the chance to joke with Innerspace host , Teddy Wilson about whether or not he would use the strength of Greer to defend him, Smith offered some insightful l comments on playing the role of Greer. He particularly commented on how the crew has been on Destiny for an extended period of time and Greer is therefore showing more of his personality as opposed to just displaying the traits of a warrior. When he told Smith that he was slowly coming around to his character, the actor responded by saying that now that they have been on the ship for sometime we are able to see the military show more of their personal lives aboard of the ships and that we can therefore see Greer’s lighter side.
Actor David Blue and Elyse Levesque made a comment on how they were dating. It was, however, unclear to many if they were joking or not, when actress Ming Na added that all three of them were dating!
Actress Elyse Levesque gave her opinions on how Chloe was taking the current issue of mutation. She indicated that she is happy with how her character has greatly developed in the series 1.5 seasons. She notes that Chloe feels “alienated”[ laughs at the pun!] behaves very maturely about her situation, by accepting it. The actress reports, how it is a very mature response given the extraordinary events which are happening to her and in contrast to the what the character’s previous reaction would have been.
When asked about portraying her character, Ming Na indicated that it was one of the most challenging roles she ever played. She noted that when fans come up to her and tell her that they love to hate her character’s she feels as though she has done her job well. The actress , however, added that she loves how Camille is such a complex character and because of her many layers , her intentions are often misunderstood. Na also stated that despite Camille’s many vulnerabilities, she does have to wear a mask which is quite different from that of the military personal, but this is slowly being taken off as time aboard the ship progresses for those on board.
Actress Julia Benson had the chance to comment on her role as Lt, Venessa James. She noted that she was pleased with how her character had developed.
Actress, Jennifer Spence , who plays the intelligent, Lisa Park was asked about her character’s romance with Jamil Walker ‘s character, Ronald Greer. She simply responded jokingly, indicating that she does not know if Greer is capable of intense romance but she is sure that Jamil is [ although not from any personal experience, of course!]She then added that the audience would have to wait and see what develops from this relationship.
Actor Patrick Gilmore ,who plays Volker said he always wanted a love interest for his character. Wright was quick to suggest that this would not happen.
Producers, Brad Wright and Robert C Cooper also had the chance to exclusively discuss SGU on the show. The two discussed issues regarding the serialized nature of the series . Wright indicated that they to tend to have a general idea of what is going to happen as the start of each half of the season as the seasons are shown in television into two halves. However, Wright adds that, this is not only from a production perspective but also from a storytelling one in that they what to know where the storyline will end up at the end off each half, so that each episode can be used to help reach this outcome. They also discussed how in Science Fiction in any concept, to which there is merit, can be considered for the series.
When Teddy Wilson ,discussed the Gemini nominations with the producers, they both indicated that they were happy that not only was this a Canadian series that was doing so well, but also that it is a science fiction series. Copper, specifically noted that this was because of the fact that although other genres such as comedy had their own categories in the ceremonies, Sci Fi did not. For Stargate to be one of the shows acknowledged, spoke volumes about the series.
Cooper , who was stepping back from the franchise after 17 years left fans with a farewell message. He indicated that while it was ideal to have such a great cast and crew to work with, one does not enter the industry to work in the same thing for 17 years. He wants to explore other opportunities, but noted that he has not completely stepped back from the production and he is as much of a fan as anybody who was gathered in the massive studio audience.
